This review presents the work of an international team of researchers devoted to a thorough description of the problems of modern sociolinguistics. The developmental stages and basic concepts of sociolinguistics are analysed, and the trends and methods of modern sociolinguistic researches are presented. The mutual influences of language and society are demonstrated and the legal status of the state language in Ukraine is analysed.
